100 Words - I'm Occufried

September 29, 2011

100 Word Challenge WidenedSince I saw you last, let's see...new reports of malware, hours of hair-pulling and investigating, no answers, bus ride to New York to "show up" and represent on Wall Street, marching, moving, chanting, listening, seeing, police barricading people, arrests, confusion, dismay, resolve, dead legs, sore throat, visit with city friends, bus ride, so many thoughts, son gashes hand while doing dishes (keeping an unbroken record of 1 ER visit per every year of his life), doc follow-up, catch-up with work, and one red velvet cupcake.

Google still reports "no malware detected". If you're getting warning messages still - I just don't know. I don't have the heart to have to start this thing all over but if the warnings don't cease and desist already, I may have to. It's just so...shitty. That someone is out there taking advantage of security holes on people's blogs. They probably like to poke babies in the eye and steal their candy too. Jerks.

Besides, aren't blogs supposed to be magically easy or something? I have kids, I expect life to complicated. I have a blog, complications are not allowed.

Sigh. Rant over. Except that some weeks y'all make it really tough for me to narrow down to one choice to feature. Good stuff this week. Ultimately it was the last line of Seeking Elevation's piece that really reached out from the screen and grabbed me by the intestines.

As we walked closer, I found myself relieved to see it was just a bird.  Not a cat or a rat.  Mammals are always messier.  But birds are like balloons that merely drop from the sky when they’re done.
My son crouched too close and then announced, “When you get really old, you start to die.  I learned that at school.”
We got on the bus as my head swapped secrets with the all-at-once method of dying.  The cars, the cats, the tens of thousands of ways life simply closes around the space you used to occupy, forcing you out.
Right?
Lately I'm falling into bed, head spinning, and then I pick up Bone Dance by Emma Bull. Dazzling writing. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you're at all into the sci-fi, post-apocalyptic genre. The byline is, "A Fantasy for Technophiles". Yes. Yes.
The word is:

WIDENED

P.S. The 100 words jpg here is freshly uploaded, so if the malware was embedded in the image, this one should be clean.

P.P.S. I'm keeping the linky list open until SUNDAY at midnight - you know, since I'm so late in posting and all.

Took a wee road trip to one of my favorite Vermont bookstores - Norwich Bookstore. The kind of bookstore where people know each other and you hear book recommendations being swapped. #norwichvt #norwichbookstore #vermontbookstores #vermontlife

I have been waiting for this day for over a month! I am beyond stoked to have gotten my order in for one of these 10 limited edition resin prints - "Mother Mary". A portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley by @marcscheff.
I fell in love with this piece the second I saw it. It's absolutely gorgeous, but also...Mary Shelley! Mother of Frankenstein. Daughter of the famous defender of women’s rights, Mary Wollstonecraft. Writer of what many consider the first piece of science fiction. A novel "concerned with the destructive nature of power when allied to wealth".
Plus, I read Frankenstein in a literature course at my beloved Alma Mater, Smith.
From a post by Marc Scheff about the original:
"In researching for the piece, I found myself drawn to and compelled by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s life. Her work is compelling, and the life behind it adds color and depth to an already heartbreaking story. I always love the story of creative work. Her capacity to create in the face of the events of her life, that inspired me most."
Sweet-peas, this JUST got released, and I know there's already at least one less available out of the 10 because I just ordered mine. Do NOT kick yourself for letting this one pass. https://www.marcscheff.com/prod…/mother-mary-original-print/ (photo swiped from Marc’s Facebook)

This pair of #marionbronze snowy owl bookends have been in my shop forever. They sold this weekend, and I’m super happy to send them to a new home, but also...they’ve been hanging around my space for so long I had grown rather attached. Going to miss them! #marionbronzebookends #bookends #owls #snowowl #harrypotter
